CASE STUDY // MONTANA INSTITUTE

INTRODUCTION

The Montana Institute helps individuals, communities and organizations apply the

Science of the Positive and Positive Community Norms (PCN) frameworks to promote

positive behaviors, manage change, foster transformation, and increase both healthy

norms and positive protective factors.

The Montana Institute invited Dual Studios to submit a proposals to direct, shoot, edit and finalize video content for a 10-minute (approx) documentary-style video highlighting the successful normative and cultural transformations related to youth alcohol and substance use prevention that have occurred across the state of Minnesota over the past 15 years due to its ongoing partnership with the MN Department of Health & Human Services. The video will feature 3-4 focus communities in different parts of MN.

The goal is to tell a beautiful, dynamic, inspirational story about an entire state that is in the process of transforming the way communities think, act, and interact around the very real and purposeful choices to protect youth and families, increase health and safety, and grow the numbers of youth whose norm is NOT using substances.

THE TASK

OUR APPROACH

For this documentary, we proposed a layered, dynamic, and cinematic piece that harnesses The Science of the Positive’s Cycle of Transformation. Through a chapter structure, we will move through each of the four stages—Spirit, Science, Action, and Return—all while featuring stories of individual, community, and state-wide progress and evolution. These four chapters will also function as our cutdowns, allowing the stories within to stand alone in their own right.

Depending less on the traditional talking-head structure, our documentary will focus on crafted visualizations of our subjects’ narratives. Through preliminary interviews prior to the start of production, we will stitch together an audio narration of each chapter’s story. We will use this to identify activities, scenarios, and events to capture evocative imagery that speaks directly to the outer and inner journeys of these communities. Our edit will flow seamlessly between each chapter, layering powerful original music, sound design, graphics, and mixed media to cement our story’s emotional arc.

THE RESULT

Growing The Good- A Minnesota Story

CUTDOWNS

The greatest benefit of the chapter-structure of our documentary is that it will make creating our cutdowns really intuitive. Since each section focuses on a specific stage of the Cycle of Transformation while featuring individual, community, or state stories, each chapter may be lifted from the long-form documentary to stand alone as its own powerful piece.
